Alarcon Elementary School Educators Attend a Barbecue at the White House
SAN ELIZARIO, TEXAS – Educators throughout the county are enjoying time off to rest and recover before the beginning of the 2021-2022 school year. Two Alarcon Elementary School Colleagues attended a 4th of July barbecue at the White House during their summer vacation. This honor was made possible through the nomination of Librarian Blanca Guerrero by Counselor Nora Garcia to the office of Senator Cesar Blanco and coordinated by Cassandra Urrutia.
Mrs. Guerreros's selection came just weeks before the 4th of July festivities. As part of her official invitation, which arrived via e-mail from the President and Dr. Jill Biden, Mrs. Guerrero was able to take three additional guests. So, Mrs. Guerrero took her husband, Fernando Ortiz, who is also a San Elizario High School alumnus from the class of 2001, her two-year-old son, and extended the invitation to Mrs. Garcia.
Mrs. Blanca Guerrero has 13 years of educational service. She is a former English Language Arts teacher and presently serves as the librarian at Alarcon Elementary School. She states, "Receiving this invitation to the White House is another dream realized." This invitation is of personal significance as she received permanent residency 21 years ago and promised herself to embrace challenges and not waste opportunities. Guerrero adds, "I hope that my example shows my students and baby that hard work loving what you do can bring priceless memories and opportunities."
Mrs. Nora Garcia was one of the guests invited by Mrs. Guerrero. One of her first experiences in education was serving as a teaching assistant to migrant children in Warwick, New York, during a summer camp when she was just seventeen years old. She has served as a kindergarten teacher, social worker, and school counselor. Garcia exclaims, "Receiving an invitation to be a guest at the White House on the 4th of July solidifies that everything is possible if you believe and never underestimate the possibilities in your life!"
The 4th of July barbecue was entitled “America's Back Together” and held on the South Lawn of the White House. This 4th of July, Americans celebrated 245 years of independence. Approximately 1000 other guests invited included essential workers and military family members. Mrs. Guerrero is thankful for the memorable experience and "thanks to Ms. Garcia for putting my name in the ring, cheering me on, and accompanying my family and me."
