SAN ELIZARIO, TEXAS - Apart from being a great team in the kitchen, they are also excellent human beings at all times. It seems like a simple job. The reality results in being a more complex task. Not anyone would dare to work in a school cafeteria. Doing so involves a lot of effort because it is not just cooking. Before cooking in the cafeteria, team members have to take courses to prepare. Sometimes, this can be a challenge for many people who do not have or feel the love to cook for teenagers. In this work, a lot of courage is required to do things and it is admirable to serve in a school cafeteria. Working with teenagers and children can be a very difficult job. However, the kitchen staff at San Elizario High School sees no problem having to collaborate with students. On the contrary, the team sees this as a beautiful job since students are one of their inspirations to do their job with more enthusiasm and motivation.
The San Elizario kitchen group is composed of Maggie Paz, Marisela Guerrero, Diana Berumen, Gloria Melendez, Norma Chavez, Algeria Estrada, Margie Flores, Johana Ybarra, Norma Giron and Oscar Lopez. They decided to work in the kitchen for several reasons: closeness, accessibility, and comfort. The work they do is not simple. Maggie Paz, who is in charge of the cafeteria says, “It's not just cooking and working in the cafeteria. We also need to learn. Every day there are new rules that we need to know and each school has different ways of cooking.”
Working in a school cafeteria is not simply cooking. People who have this job have to go to training. According to student Valeria Ibarra, “Sometimes the work that the kitchen staff does is very good, but we as students do not realize and do not appreciate what they do for us. Sometimes we even misbehave with them and we don't even notice it. The people in the cafeteria are people with a very nice vibe and always try to give us their best.”
Team member Oscar Lopez said, "They are our children; we do the best for them, because we all want the same for our children we have to do the best that is our work. One of the most difficult parts of working in the cafeteria of a school like San Elizario High School is working with different personalities. Our students are very good children, but the personality of each one of them varies. Our students are authentic and that motivates us to serve them in the best possible way. They are like our children and we always want the best for them and everyone.”
The work employed by the kitchen staff is one of the most difficult tasks, not anyone would have the patience to learn new recipes, new rules, temperatures and much less would have the patience to work with teenagers at different stages. We should as students take a minute and thank and appreciate the work that the cafeteria people offer us since they try to do the best for us.
