SAN ELIZARIO, TEXAS – All San Elizario Independent School District (SEISD) schools are Purple Star Designated. For the second year, district schools have carried the standard to support military-connected students and families. Alarcon Elementary School and the Ann M. Garcia-Enriquez Middle have once again received the Purple Star Designation from the Texas Education Agency.
Since 2022, four schools (Lorenzo G. Loya Primary School, Sambrano Elementary School, Borrego Elementary School, and San Elizario High School) have been previously designated. “When military-connected students enroll in our schools, we want them to know that we stand with them and appreciate them and will be there to help them transition,” states District Parent Liaison Flor Sanchez.
The designation includes having a designated military-connected liaison, an updated website, and a transition plan to assist students upon enrolling in district schools. In SEISD, the Board of Trustees also approves a yearly resolution supporting military students and their families.
The SEISD serves thirty military-connected students in grades pre-k through 12th grade. The district provides military-connected students a buddy upon entering the school system. Then, they can engage in numerous campus and district-wide events honoring the military children and families. All schools in the district have military-designated personnel who work to address the particular circumstances of military-connected students.
Sanchez states, “The best peace of mind that we can give military-connected parents is we will be here to help their children, and the practices we use for them are also a good practice for all students.” Military-connected students and families can expect continuous activities throughout the year, such as being part of the Military Connected Club (MCF), wearing military or purple shirts on Thursdays, and celebrating certain months by highlighting service members and their families. Students also have the opportunity to participate in after-school clubs and receive extra instructional support for military families affected by deployment.
