Family and Medical Leave Act

  • The Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA) requires employers to provide up to 12 weeks of unpaid, job-protected leave to eligible employees in a single 12 month period for the following reasons:

    • Birth of a son or daughter and care of a newborn child
    • Adoption or foster care placement of a child
    • Care of the employee’s spouse, son, daughter, or parent with a serious health condition
    • The employee’s own serious health condition
    • A qualifying military exigency arising from the employee’s spouse, son, daughter or parent’s active military duty or impending call or order to active duty
    • To care for a covered service member with a serious injury or illness, if the employee is the spouse, son, daughter, parent or next of kin

SEISD employees who need to take leave due to any of the above reasons must notify their immediate supervisor and request to be placed on FMLA.
